You need to see this goddamn TV show.
Friday Night Lights. The first season is out on DVD, and I'm motoring through it.
In the topline sense, it's about a high school football team in Texas. Yes, I know. But bear with me.
It's not... like TV. It's as good as good as the Wire, or the Sopranos, and almost any movie I've watched in the past year.
The acting is nuanced, the writing is funny and smart.
It's really, really good.
Friday nights on NBC, 9 pm. I think you'll probably need to catch up with season one first though.
Goddamn!

If it's as good as The Wire I'll seek it out, thanks for the tip-off.
Does this mean I need to finally get a television?
Kimananda, sort of. Cough. Cough. You must also see The Wire.
I didn't get the grown-ups who took highs school football so seriously when I was in high school. These characters are just so damn earnest. Having said that, the only reason I react to that is because this is so "not like tv". My 11 year-old watches it, but the other night I actually watched a full episode about racism. I like the way they played that complex issue - no tv wrap'em up and go ethics lesson!
ren.kat -- Does your son get put off by the football? All things considered, it's a pretty weird sport. It carries so much weird cultural and semiotic baggage.
I tried to explain it to my six year old this past weekend, and I was struck with how bureaucratic it is. It's a really constipated sport.
I've seen first two episodes and it's good. I have some appreciation of US football, and it's a really interesting game from a tactical standpoint. It's weird though and I don't think there is anyother sport like it.
I think he thinks it's funny. Esp. that they call it football.
Um...yeah Greg.
I'm a sucker for Disney "team" movies, too.
